Two families: author-date and numbered
Every style is one of two kinds. Author-date (APA, MLA, Chicago author-date, Harvard) names the author in the text. Numbered (IEEE) uses a bracketed number that maps to a numbered reference list. Get that distinction and the rest is detail.

What is the difference between author-date and numbered citations?
