What APA style is (and who uses it)

APA (American Psychological Association) style is the standard in psychology, education, nursing, and much of the social sciences. It uses an author–date system: a short in-text citation like (Smith, 2024) points readers to a full reference in an alphabetized reference list. This tool follows the 7th edition, the current version.

APA 7 reference formats, with examples

Journal article

Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Year). Title of the article. Journal Name, Volume(Issue), Pages. https://doi.org/xxxx

The journal name and the volume number are in italics; the article title is in sentence case (only the first word capitalized).

Book

Author, A. A. (Year). Title of the book. Publisher. — APA 7 no longer includes the city of publication.

Website

Author, A. A. (Year, Month Day). Title of the page. Site Name. URL — if there is no date, use (n.d.).

APA in-text citations

  • Paraphrase: (Smith, 2024)
  • Direct quote: (Smith, 2024, p. 15)
  • Two authors: (Smith & Jones, 2024)
  • Three or more: (Smith et al., 2024)
Common APA mistakes to avoid

Using title case instead of sentence case for article titles; forgetting the DOI as a link; adding a city for books (removed in APA 7); and — most seriously — citing a source an AI invented. Always confirm the paper is real before you cite it.
